The "Amândio Galhano" Vinicultural Station is an experimental and vinicultural research centre established by the C.V.R.V.V. in 1984.

Located in Arcos de Valdevez, in the heart of the Lima valley, it occupies a 66 ha. property - the Quinta de Campos de Lima - in the right bank of the Lima River.

Established with a view to develop viticulture in the Region, the vinicultural Station is a research and development organisation dedicated to solving wine producer's problems.

Among its current tasks in the field of viticulture, the following are worth special note:

  • Clonal selection of the recommended grape varieties for the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region;
  • Study of new guiding systems;
  • Study of root-stocks; of feeding and fertilising vines;
  • Planting vines on terraces and studying the phenology and adaptation of the regional grape varieties. the oenological aspect of these studies is complemented by the oenological component through the micro-vinifications made in a modern experimental winery.

Aside from rendering support to the vinicultural studies, the experimental winery has been developing other oenological studies, namely regarding yeasts and the influence of technology on stabilising the red colour of the wine.

In addition to the experimental component, the EVAG is also researching the multiplication of the vegetative component of the vine, with particular attention to the grafted vines, using the most modern techniques for the production of grafted vines.

The EVAG thus represents an essential centre of reference for the development and modernisation of viticulture in the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region.
